Holocaust

There is a verse nearby the meeting of the ELSs of Hitler and Holocaust that seems relevent. The verse states:

Someone shall burn the cow before his eyes -- its hide, and its flesh, and its blood, with it dung, shall he burn.(Deuteronomy 31:5)

Metaphorically, the hide is the institutions in the Jewish community that hold it all together, the flesh are its people, its blood are its Torah scholars and teachers, and its dung are those who deny their own heritage. The Nazis attempted a complete annihilation of them all. They made no distinction between the observant and non-observant. They made no distinction between the Torah scholars and the business people, between the business people and the peddlers. They destroyed all the Jewish institutions, everything that held the Jewish community together, in Poland and Germany.

One of only three photographs ever taken by prisoners at Birkenau and successfully smuggled out. This was taken in 1944 by a camp inmate assigned to one of the special prisoner teams (sonderkommando) who were forced to work in the gas chamber/crematoria. This photo shows prisoners burning naked corpses freshly removed from the gassing facility at Crematorium-V. These "burning pits" were used mainly in the summer of 1944, when the extermination was going at such a rate that the furnaces could not handle the number of corpses.
